SteamWell Entrée Salmon Wins First Place!

On a cold winter’s evening in Anchorage, Alaska culinary magic was happening as a handful of the best tasters in town were at the Alaska Symphony of Seafood annual competition tasting, analyzing and judging some of the newest Alaska seafood products to hit the market.

Among the entrants was Orca Bay Seafoods SteamWell Entrée Sockeye Salmon with Tuscan Herb Sauce which was entered into the New Retail Products category.  We’re proud to announce that our submission won first place! Many thanks go out to the Alaska Symphony of Seafood and the Alaska Fisheries Development Foundation for the most generous prize and for putting on a great event!

This SteamWell entrée item, along with our two other flavors, Tilapia with Chili Lime Sauce and Wild Mahi Mahi with Sun Dried Tomato Chipotle have also been entered in the New Product Showcase at the International Boston Seafood Show running March 20-22, 2011 at the Boston Convention Center. Winners of New Products Contest

Tridents Seafoods’ Wild Alaskan Peppered and Smoked Sockeye Salmon wins Grand Prize

ANCHORAGE (Feb. 14, 2011) — The Alaska Symphony of Seafood announced today the winners of its 18th annual New Products Contest judging event held in Seattle. The competition enlists chefs and industry experts to pick the best new seafood products each year. The winners were announced Friday at the Gala Soiree in Anchorage, where contestants, industry representatives, media and attendees gathered to celebrate and toast the winners.

This year’s first place winners included: Crispanko Alaska Pollock Mini-Sliders by Trident Seafoods in the Foodservice category, SteamWell Seafood Entrees – Sockeye Salmon with Tuscan Herb Sauce by Orca Bay Seafoods in the Retail Category and Wild Alaskan Peppered and Smoked Sockeye Salmon by Trident Seafoods in the Smoked category.  The grand prize, awarded to the product that received the most overall votes, also went to Wild Alaskan Peppered and Smoked Sockeye Salmon by Trident Seafoods.

“The Symphony is lots of fun, but it’s always a challenge.  We take the competition seriously, and it’s a great honor to win the independent professional judging as well as the vote of the people in Seattle,” says John Van Amerongen from Trident Seafoods.

The first place winners from each category, and the grand prize winner, will receive booth space at the distinguished International Boston Seafood Show in March, as well as airfare to and from the show.

The Alaska Symphony of Seafood New Products Contest kicked off on February 3rd in Seattle, where the judges tasted, deliberated and selected their favorite products. Evaluations were based on the products’ packaging and presentation, overall eating experience, price and potential for commercial success.

This year’s judges included: Tom Hassenauer with Food Services of America, Ron Steckler of Chang International, Omar Field with Ivar’s, Audrey Jones with Tom Douglas Restaurants, Larry Andrews with Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute, Amy Pennington with Go Go Green Garden, Robert Sevcik with Rover’s and food writers Judith Dern, Jessica Voelker and Melissa Trainer.
